Impacts of the construction of the Port of Suape on phytoplankton in the Ipojuca River estuary (Pernambuco-Brazil) BABT
Koening,Maria Luise; Leça,Enide Eskinazi; Neumann-Leitão,Sigrid; Macêdo,Silvio José de.
In order to address the impact on phytoplankton, sampling was conducted monthly at 4 fixed stations, from April/86 to March/87 at diurnal low and high tide using a plankton net (65 mum mesh size) and a 1 L Van Dorn bottle. Among the 133 taxa identified, marine littoral euryhaline species were most common, outranking Gyrosigma balticum (Ehrenberg) Rabenhorst, Nitzschia sigma (Kützing) Wm. Smith, Licmophora abbreviata Agardh, Climacosphenia moniligera Ehrenberg, Surirella febigerii Lewis, Terpsinoe musica Ehrenberg and Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reiman and Lewis. The port construction caused significant changes to the phytoplankton community with a strong influence of marine species (mainly dinoflagellate) because of the opening of the reef near...

In situ structuring of virioplankton through bacterial exoenzymatic activity: interaction with phytoplankton ArchiMer
Ory, Pascaline; Palesse, S.; Delmas, Daniel; Montanie, Helene.
The abundance and composition of microbial communities were investigated during 2007 in Marennes Oleron Bay (France) in order to characterize the biological relationships governing the planktonic food web. Compared to the results of previous years, there was a lower abundance and a lower magnitude of variations in autotrophic and heterotrophic microbial entities in 2007. Using a Spearman rank correlation analysis, a significant link for biological abundance was only noted between bacteria and ciliates. However, an interesting relationship was highlighted between chlorophyll a and bacterial aminopeptidase and beta-glucosidase exoenzymatic activities. Two characteristic periods of virus-bacteria uncoupling were observed in spring and autumn 2007. Using...

Influence of barley straw and submerged macrophytes on fishpond wastewater quality OceanDocs
Ghobrial, M.G.; Okbah, M.A.; Gharib, S.M.; Soliman, A.M..
Barley straw has received, recently, considerable attention as an algicide, which could be used to control algal growth in fishponds. It is regarded as cost-effective, user friendly and environmentally sounds. On the other hand, the submerged wetland macrophytes are crucial for the stabilization of clear water state in shallow lakes, by their active production of anti-algal compounds (allelochemicals) through allelopathy. Microcosm experiments using barley straw and the submerged macrophytes: Najas marina L., Potamogeton pectinatus L. and Ceratophyllum demersum L. in culture media with fishpond water were carried out outdoors to simulate the situation as natural as possible. Nutrients concentrations were measured beside the analysis of phytoplankton and...

Influence of plankton concentration on gametogenesis and spawning of the black lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu archipelago, French polynesia) ArchiMer
Fournier, Jonathan; Levesque, Emmanuelle; Pouvreau, Stephane; Le Pennec, Marcel; Le Moullac, Gilles.
Pearl culture industry represents one of the dominant business sector of French Polynesia. However, it still entirely relies on unpredictable spat collection success. Our aim was to assess the influence of natural plankton concentration fluctuations on maturation and spawning of the black lip pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, during a 4 months survey conducted in Ahe atoll lagoon. Plankton concentration was assessed by chlorophyll a extraction and by microscope counts while gonadic index, gonado-visceral dry weights and histology were used to measure pearl oysters reproduction activity. We found that (i) plankton concentration fluctuations were mainly related to wind regime, (ii) gametogenesis rate was mainly related to plankton concentration, (iii)...

Influence of shellfish farming activities on the biogeochemical composition of the water column in Thau lagoon ArchiMer
Souchu, Philippe; Vaquer A, André; Collos, Yves; Landrein, Sonia; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Bibent, Bertrand.
Thau lagoon is a Mediterranean shellfish ecosystem with large biomasses of oysters growing in waters with high residence time due to low tidal ranges, The influence of filter feeders (oysters and their epibiota) on the spatial distribution of particulate and dissolved compounds in the water column of Thau lagoon was studied through its variation with time, In 1991/1992, daily variations were investigated in pens, corridors and outside shellfish farming zones for nutrients, chlorophyll a and primary production. Salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter and chlorophyll a were also monitored in surface waters inside and outside shellfish farming zones each week from January 1993 to March 1994. The presence of shellfish farms led to a decrease by...

Interactions between polystyrene microplastics and marine phytoplankton lead to species-specific hetero-aggregation ArchiMer
Long, Marc; Paul-pont, Ika; Hegaret, Helene; Moriceau, Brivaela; Lambert, Christophe; Huvet, Arnaud; Soudant, Philippe.
To understand the fate and impacts of microplastics (MP) in the marine ecosystems, it is essential to investigate their interactions with phytoplankton as these may affect MP bioavailability to marine organisms as well as their fate in the water column. However, the behaviour of MP with marine phytoplanktonic cells remains little studied and thus unpredictable. The present study assessed the potential for phytoplankton cells to form hetero-aggregates with small micro-polystyrene (micro-PS) particles depending on microalgal species and physiological status. A prymnesiophycea, Tisochrysis lutea, a dinoflagellate, Heterocapsa triquetra, and a diatom, Chaetoceros neogracile, were exposed to micro-PS (2 μm diameter; 3.96 μg L−1) during their growth culture...

Interpretation of particle spectra of electronic counters by microscopical methods OMA
Bakker, C.; Prins, T.C.; Tackx, M.L.M..
1. Using monocultures or single species dominated natural phytoplankton, cell counts and volume estimations obtained by visual and electronic methods show reasonable agreement.Calibration seems possible (Figs.1-2).2. Further examples given (Fig. 3-4) show that microscopical identification of the volume peaks in electronic counter spectra of natural seston is not quite simple. Phytoplankton peaks may not be detected in the Counter spectrum. Shifts of Counter peaks to the left side of the visual spectrum may be found when cylindrical, elongated or needle- like phytoplankton dominate the sample.3. Both visual and electronic methods include potentially large errors. Possibly particle volume is either overestimated by the microscope and / or underestimated by...

Interspecific differences in the effect of fish on marine microbial plankton ArchiMer
Villeger, Sebastien; Fouilland, Eric; Argenty, Jeremy; Bouvier, Corinne; Carre, Claire; Bouvier, Thierry.
The productivity of most marine ecosystems is limited by the availability of dissolved nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Nutrient recycling is therefore a key process for ecosystem functioning. Fish recycle nutrients through the excretion of ammonia and phosphate and can influence the abundance and community structure of primary producers such as phytoplankton. However, the effect of fish on other plankton compartments, and whether all fish species have similar effects, is largely unknown. We used a tank experiment to test how 2 Mediterranean fish species, gilthead seabream Sparus aurata and golden mullet Chelon auratus, with distinctly different N and P excretion rates, can affect the abundance and community structure of 3 plankton compartments:...

Isolation of 12 microsatellite markers following a pyrosequencing procedure and cross-priming in two invasive cryptic species, Alexandrium catenella (group IV) and A. tamarense (group III) (Dinophyceae) ArchiMer
Laporte, Martin; Shao, Zhaojun; Berrebi, Patrick; Laabir, Mohamed; Abadie, Eric; Faivre, Nicolas; Rieuvilleneuve, Fabien; Masseret, Estelle.
Alexandrium catenella (group IV) and Alexandrium tamarense (group III) (Dinophyceae) are two cryptic invasive phytoplankton species belonging to the A. tamarense species complex. Their worldwide spread is favored by the human activities, transportation and climate change. In order to describe their diversity in the Mediterranean Sea and understand their settlements and maintenances in this area, new microsatellite markers were developed based on Thau lagoon (France) samples of A. catenella and A. tamarense strains. In this study twelve new microsatellite markers are proposed. Five of these microsatellite markers show amplifications on A. tamarense and ten on A. catenella. Three of these 12 microsatellite markers allowed amplifications on both cryptic...

La surveillance des phycotoxines dans les coquillages du milieu marin. Le réseau REPHY : objectifs, stratégies, et principaux résultats ArchiMer
Belin, Catherine.
The surveillance of phycotoxins in marine shellfish. The REPHY network: objectives, strategies and primary results One of the objectives of REPHY (network for phytoplankton and phycotoxin surveillance) is to monitor toxin-producing micro-algae species in the marine environment that are likely to accumulate in seafood products, and to screen for these toxins in shellfish. This surveillance is undertaken in the framework of the European regulations. Three groups of toxins are thus monitored and are associated with three genera of toxic phytoplankton: (i) Dinophysis, a producer of the okadaic acid (with diarrhoeic effects) and pectenotoxin families of toxins; in the same group of so-called “lipophilic toxins”, two other families of regulated toxins are...

Le maximum saisonnier de Dynophysis cf acuminata à Antifer (Normandie, France) ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Maggi, Pierre; Proniewski, F.; Truquet, Philippe; Bardouil, Michele.
Since 1987 Antifer oil tanker terminal (Normandy, France) was weIl known, as a preferential area for summer highest blooms of Dinophysis cf acuminata, a toxic dinoflagellate. Three oceanographic cruises were made in August 1989, before, in the course of and after the seasonal max. of this species. Results obtained from these cruises (hydrological parameters and phytoplankton) as weIl as from a daily survey at a reference station in Antifer harbour, corrobora te the prevailing role of coastal up flowing of Seine estuarine waters, pushed to the coast by a dominant S - SW wind, on intensity and duration of Dinophysis bloom. Such observations are in agreement with those of Summer 1987 at reference station.

Feki, W.; Hamza, A.; Bel Hassen, M.; Rebai, A..
